The Funeral Service is a Straightforward service done in the Church or in the Cemetery/Crematorium Chapel without Mass being said for the deceased. Mass could however be offered for the repose of the Soul of the deceased at a later time.

Unlike the Requiem Mass, the Funeral Service is a more basic form of Service and would last no longer than half an hour. It could take place in the Church, or a Crematorium Chapel. We are more restricted in a Crematorium Chapel. We may have half an hour, but that includes five minutes to get people to their seats, and five minutes for people to leave. We therefore have only twenty minutes for the service. This does however differ from Crematorium to Crematorium, but not by much.

A Requiem Mass, or Funeral Mass, is a Funeral Service with Mass. It takes at least an hour for this type of service and probably longer, depending upon how many people are likely to attend. If it's going to be a large attendance, then an hour and a half is not uncommon. So it would be prudent to keep this in mind when planning your Service.

It is always the wish of the Church to offer a Requiem Mass for anyone who was Catholic irrespective of whether the rest of the family practice their faith or not; have fallen away from their faith; or have not been brought up in the faith. If it is the wish of the deceased relative to have a requiem Mass, this will always be offered for the repose of their soul. Families should always respect the wishes of their deceased loved one even if they themselves do not want to have a Requiem Mass.
