The Vigil is the reception of the body into Church the evening before the Requiem Mass (Not for a Funeral Service) the following day. If you choose to have a Vigil Service for your loved one, the priest will meet you at the entrance to the church, bless the body, and all process into church. There is a simple service lasting no longer than half an hour, and there is an opportunity for people to pray, or talk to the priest if they wish, or if it's been a while, there is opportunity for confession too.

The body will remain in church over night until the Service the following day. Once received into church, the body will not be released until after the commemoration during the service just before the procession to the place of rest.

If the body is going to be committed to rest in the Crematorium, you may consider having the service in the Crematorium Chapel. That being so, the body will be received at the beginning of the service and its unlikely to be received the night before the service, but you could speak to the funeral director about the possibility of this. If it's the first service to be done in the day, there's no logical reason why it cannot be received the night before, but time could make it impractical, or the Crematorium may simply not do it.
