The Church has always taught that it is a Spiritual Work of Mercy to pray for the souls of the faithful departed, imploring God to purify the souls of the dead “by the fire of his charity” and to bring them at last to their Heavenly Home.
Of your Charity please remember in your Prayers all those who have died.
Eternal Father, I offer You the most Precious Blood of Your Divine Son, Jesus, in union with the Masses said throughout the world today, for all the Holy Souls in Purgatory, for all sinners everywhere, for sinners in the universal Church, those in my own home and within my family. Amen.

Saint Paul assured the Romans, and us today, that if they have died with Christ, then they shall also live with him (Romans 6:8). They have been freed from this hostile force known as sin that has so dominated them. Now they should consider themselves dead to sin and alive to God in Christ Jesus (Romans 6:11). Since Christ has conquered sin and death, they need not fear them.

This is not just a question of earning our salvation through good works, by doing good deeds and hoping that good works alone will earn us eternal salvation. Or that we can pay our way into heaven by having lots of Masses said for us. No, we must strenuously aim at perfection and holiness, which means doing both good works and truly living our faith, by hearing the Gospel message and putting it into action. We Catholics know this place of purification as Purgatory; a place Protestants don’t believe exists.

In light of this understanding, the church commemorates All Souls to remind us still living, to pray for the dead. One way we can do this is to have Masses said for them on their anniversary of death, and at other times, for their immortal Souls.

At one time, at a Requiem Mass, there’d be many Mass cards displayed, which indicated the numbers of Masses which were to be said to aid the immortal Soul to enter heaven by the help of our prayers. It is becoming a rare sight these days to see many, if any, Mass Cards at a Funeral; which in itself is an indication that people no longer understand their faith, rarely does a priest receive Mass intentions from young parents to pray for their departed parents or Grandparents.

Holy Communion, the sign of our Unity, especially at a time of grief, is not important in the lives of the absent Catholics, as many of them don’t receive Communion regularly, and simply don’t know what to do, or how to behave, having little if any respect for our Lord Present in the Blessed Sacrament.

More importantly, today also reminds us to take our own lives and our relationship with Almighty God much more seriously if we don’t want to spend too long in purgatory, or indeed go to hell; a place most Catholics don’t believe exists anymore, if the numbers going to confession every week is to be understood as a sign of our belief in hell.

We can still confess our Sins, venal and mortal, now whilst we’re still alive; it’s never too late whilst we’re still alive. But it is too late when we die, for then we will be judged, and if we have died in sin, we will go to purgatory and will need the prayers of the church to finally get to heaven.

But we must be reminded that there are sins’ that are so severe that even purgatory won’t prepare us for heaven. If we have lived lives that have been far from God, if we have rejected God in this life, then he will reject us in the next.

Those Catholics who don’t believe in hell; join the atheists and humanists who believe that all this is nonsense. They have no fear of hell, no fear of God, and live terrible lives as a result. One day they will pay for it in hell.

So we are also called today to pray for the conversion of all those who having heard the gospel message, have rejected it, so one day their souls can be saved.
