Celebrates the coming of Jesus - the light of the world -
Very dark this time of year, very old tradition to look forward to the return of the long summer nights,
Also darkness reminded people of bad things, and light reminded people of good things - that's why we say Jesus is the light of the world - because he’s good.
What do you notice about the Advent wreath?
Round - circle - has no beginning or end - reminds us of God’s unending love.
Circle - made with leaves that are green throughout the year (evergreen) - reminds us of God’s everlasting love for us, which never dies.
The candles represent Jesus, the light of the world.
There are 5 candles - four on the outside of the wreath, one for each Sunday of Advent - and one for Christmas day itself.
Candle 1 - lit 1st Sunday of Advent.
Purple - traditional colour of Advent, reminds us of saying sorry to others, and to forgive those who hurt us.
Also reminds us of the Hope we have in Jesus forgiveness of us, and of the hope we have of him coming again.
2nd candle - lit 2nd Sunday of Advent (lit last Sunday).
purple - our longing to be forgiven by those we have hurt.
We remember those holy men and women who spoke of the coming of Jesus - the Prophets - what they said was written down in the Old Testament in the Bible.
We remember too John the Baptist - Jesus cousin – the greatest and last of the Old Testament Prophets - who spoke about Jesus coming - and prepared the people to listen to him.
Traditionally known as Gaudete (Rejoice - Latin) Sunday - we rejoice as Jesus birthday gets closer (as you got excited when you birthday got closer, so we get excited as Jesus birthday gets nearer)
Because we are happy, we use a rose coloured candle to show our happiness - rose being a lighter colour purple.
4th candle - lit 4th (final Sunday) of Advent.
Reminds us of Jesus parents, Mary and Joseph - who prepared for his birth - by travelling on a donkey - but couldn’t find anywhere to go - Jesus was born in a stable.
5th candle - lit Christmas day.
Reminds us that Jesus was born on Christmas day.
The candle is white - reminds us of Jesus - the light of the world - Jesus who is good.
As we open our presents on Christmas day - we are reminded that the best present ever given to us was by God - that present was his son Jesus.
So Advent - is the name given for the 4 weeks before Christmas where we prepare to celebrate Jesus birthday.
Remember those who prepared for his birth, Holy men and women, John the Baptist, Jesus parents.
